Sailing

As early as 1895, in Red Wing class boats built across Stamford Harbor in the Luders Boatyard, the Stamford Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program produced some of the finest and most successful junior sailors on the Long Island Sound. Today’s Junior Sailing Program, for boys and girls 8-18 years of age, provides a broad-based education in safe seamanship, navigation, competitive racing, and a respect for the sea. A variety of classes, based upon the sailor’s age and ability, are taught in Optimists, Lasers and 420’s, and the Program offers a Boating Basics course during which juniors can earn a power boating license.

Over the years, the Club has hosted junior interclub regattas, such as the Long Island Sound Optimist Championship in 1989. And, as a unique enrichment to our Junior Sailing Program in the last several years, junior sailors have participated in an exchange with the Royal Danish Yacht Club. Parent- child events round out this Club program. The complete details are available from the Junior Sailing Program Chairpersons. The program is conducted under the supervision of a program director and a staff of experienced instructors.
