Stamford Yacht Club's One Design program is currently built around the Ideal 18 fleet, providing members with an accessible, competitive, and enjoyable pathway to one-design racing. Whether you are new to racing or looking to sharpen your skills, the Ideal 18 offers a unique platform to develop boat handling, tactics, teamwork, and racecourse management in a true one-design environment.
The One Design program helps SYC sailors grow. Each race day features both new racers and seasoned Ideal 18 veterans lining up for multiple windward-leeward races. Many former One Design sailors have gone on to purchase their own racing boats, proudly flying the SYC burgee while becoming active participants in the broader racing community in Western Long Island Sound.
SYC has a long tradition of supporting one-design racing. Over the years, members have raced a variety of classes, including J22s, Viper 640s, Club 420s, JY-15s, Lasers, and others. While the Club's current emphasis is on the Ideal 18 fleet, other fleets are welcome to show up on race days. No matter the boat, the mission remains the same: to provide members with opportunities to learn, compete, and advance their sailing skills.
The Ideal 18 Committee oversees the maintenance and use of the Club-owned fleet and works to ensure that members of all experience levels have opportunities to participate. Whether your goal is to become a better racer, crew on larger boats, or eventually own and campaign your own boat, the SYC One Design program is an excellent place to start.
