One Design

The emphasis at SYC is on variety!

We welcome any number of fleets at the starting line of our One Design Series races, and the Race Committee will design a distinct course for each such fleet, as appropriate.

In 2008, the Club began supporting the development of a fleet of privately owned Viper 640 sport boats for one design racing. With so much attention given to the expansion of that new fleet, little attention was paid to the involvement of other fleets. The erroneous notion that only one fleet can race in the One Design Series was reinforced by a history of designating one fleet as competing for the One Design Series trophy.

After two years, SYC’s Viper fleet became independently viable, and its continued growth is ensured by the enthusiasm of our own participating members, as well as by the design’s adoption by a number of other clubs. It also became apparent in 2010 that the Viper fleet was serving a different segment of our membership than the one that had been served by Ideal 18s in the early part of the decade.  So it was determined in mid-2010 that One Design Racing in Ideal 18s should be revived.

The same reasoning applies to Club 420s, JY-15s, Lasers and any other fleet that might form within the Club. These boats vary in size, complexity, cost, portability, availability, convenience, etc. If we want to maximize the number of members participating in One Design Racing, then we have to include all available one design fleets.

SYC’s One Design Series Committee oversees a summer-long intra-club racing program. In order to maximize every member’s opportunity to race, the One Design Series schedule is integrated in the Race Schedule published by the Regatta Committee, which oversees and coordinates all racing under SYC’s auspices. The One Design Series is our principal one design racing activity.

To varying degrees, our one design fleets participate in regattas hosted by other clubs and class associations. From time to time, we have the opportunity to host such events at SYC.

The Ideal 18 Committee administers the maintenance and use of Club-owned Ideal 18s. The Junior Sailing Committee administers the maintenance and use of Club 420s and other vessels for which it is responsible. Fleets of privately owned vessels are informally coordinated by their owners.

Every active One-design fleet is encouraged to help maintain a page within the Club’s web site for the information of current participants and other members who may be interested in becoming involved. Links to fleet pages already in existence appear in the left margin of this page.
